On the invitation by Ernst Frost, of "natur" magazine, Munich, Hundertwasser dedicated this symbol to the initiative "Bäume für Sarajevo E.V." (Trees for Sarajevo). 26 children of the Hrasno grammar school in Sarajevo had founded the club "Drvecé za Sarajevo" (Trees for Sarajevo) under the leadership of Professor Dusanka Radakovi and Zekira Vranjaa. It was the initiative's goal to replant avenues and parks in the city, along with hillsides and orchards in the vicinity, since the trees had been almost entirely cut down during the siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995. In October 1997, the first 100 Trees for Sarajevo were planted in the district of Hrasno. The pupils participated in caring for the trees and publicised the project in the neighbourhood. The reforestation was meant as a visible, durable sign of humanity and solidarity with the population of all of Bosnia.
