Hundertwasser's comment on the work
"Il Cardazzeuropeo" is a picture of the art dealer Carlo Cardazzo. He had seen the "European" and wanted to have a similar portrait. So I painted him à la "European", too. The picture is a brother of the former. I painted it in 1955, whereas the "European" was done in 1951. If I want to re-paint an old picture, I always try to copy the old picture as exactly as I can. But it always comes out as something entirely different. I did not have the picture "European Twirling His Moustache" before me while I tried to copy it. But when I painted the "Cardazzeuropeo" I thought it looked exactly like the first picture. Only when they were placed side by side did I see that there was a big difference.
